In short: Hue Jackson’s career is a study in extremes. He has developed Pro Bowl wide receivers and guided rookie quarterbacks to playoff victories, yet he also presided over one of the most historically difficult eras in professional football history.

Hue Jackson’s coaching resume is a complex tapestry of high-level offensive success and unprecedented struggle. During his time with the Cincinnati Bengals, he helped develop one of the NFL's most prolific receiving duos, Chad Johnson and T. J. Houshmandzadeh. During 2006, led by him, the duo achieved over 1,000 receiving yards each within one year, marking a Bengals milestone.

Jackson also demonstrated an ability to optimize talent at the professional level. As the Oakland Raiders' offensive coordinator in 2010, he oversaw a massive scoring surge, with the team more than doubling its output from the previous year to 410 total points. That season, running back Darren McFadden emerged as a statistical powerhouse, totaling 1,664 yards from scrimmage and ranking fifth in the NFL in total yards.

However, Jackson’s tenure as head coach of the Cleveland Browns from 2016 to 2018 remains a statistical anomaly. He compiled a record of 3–36–1, including a winless 2017 season that saw the Browns finish 0–16. This performance stands as the worst record among coaches who have led an NFL team for at least 40 games. His time in Cleveland was also marked by controversy; Jackson later alleged that Browns owner Jimmy Haslam misled him regarding the franchise's rebuilding plans.

After his NFL head coaching stints, Jackson transitioned to the collegiate level, serving as offensive coordinator for Tennessee State in 2021 and head coach at Grambling State from 2022 to 2023. As of 2025, he continues his coaching career in the collegiate ranks as the offensive coordinator for Georgia State University.
