The record-breaking teenager who became a Premier League icon
In short: In 2002, Newcastle United shattered their transfer records for a 19-year-old Portuguese midfielder. While his time in England was marked by immense hype and heavy investment, his journey through Spain, Portugal, and the Middle East reveals a complex career of brilliance, injury, and unexpected leadership.
Hugo Viana’s arrival in the Premier League was nothing short of a sensation. On 20 June 2002, Newcastle United signed the Sporting CP midfielder for €12 million (£8.5 million), a fee that surpassed the £5 million paid for England’s Jermaine Jenas. At the time, Newcastle chairman Freddie Shepherd believed Viana was the finest young talent in the world. The deal also marked a significant moment in football business as the first major transaction between English clubs and the influential Portuguese agent Jorge Mendes.
Despite the heavy investment, Viana struggled to secure a permanent starting role at St James' Park. While he found success in the Champions League against teams like Feyenoord, he faced stiff competition from established players like Gary Speed and Kieron Dyer. His career subsequently took him through various high-profile stints, including a period at Valencia in Spain and a highly successful return to Portugal with Braga. During his time at Braga, he played a key role in their impressive second-place finish in the Primeira Liga.
Viana’s career was not without profound personal and professional challenges. In November 2011, he paid tribute to his former mentor, Gary Speed, by wearing a 'Gary Rest In Peace' T-shirt during a match against Porto. Beyond the pitch, his playing days took him to Dubai, where he helped Al Ahli secure a domestic treble. After retiring in 2016, Viana transitioned into football administration, holding director roles at Belenenses and Sporting CP, and eventually moving into his current role as director of football at Manchester City.
