In short: In the 1978–79 rugby league season, Hull F.C. achieved a feat of dominance so absolute it remains a unique milestone in British sports history. They didn't just win the title; they secured a perfect record, winning every single one of their 26 Division Two matches.

In 1865, Hull F.C. was established by former York schoolboys led by Anthony Bradley. The team's core consisted of the five sons of Reverend Scott and several local tradesmen like plumbers and glaziers. They were among the first Yorkshire clubs to join the Rugby Football Union in 1871 before eventually splitting from it in 1895 to form the Northern Union.

The club's identity is deeply tied to its geography and history. Based on the west side of the River Hull, they have long been rivals with Hull Kingston Rovers on the east side. Their nickname, 'the Airlie Birds,' originated in 1895 when they moved to a new home at the Boulevard in Airlie Street. This era also saw the club's first major success: winning their inaugural Challenge Cup in 1914 after signing Billy Batten for a then-world record fee of £600.

The late 20th century was marked by both extremes and innovation. In 1955, Roy Francis became the first coach in any British team sport to be a Black man. The club also navigated identity crises during the Super League transition, briefly rebranding as 'Hull Sharks' before reverting to Hull F.C. after a failed merger proposal with Gateshead Thunder. Despite these shifts, they maintained a legacy of high-stakes drama, including a 1985 Challenge Cup final in front of nearly 100,000 fans at Wembley.

Modern history is defined by stadium moves and record-breaking runs. The club moved to the £44 million KC Stadium in 2003 after over a century at their previous home. In 2006, under coach Peter Sharp, they secured their highest Super League finish by winning 13 consecutive matches, including a landmark victory over St Helens on their own turf.
