The anthem of resilience was actually a petty breakup 'kiss off'
In short: Most listeners view Elton John's "I'm Still Standing" as a triumphant anthem of survival against life's hardships. However, the song's origin is far less profound. According to lyricist Bernie Taupin, the track was originally intended as a dismissive message to an ex-girlfriend, signaling that he didn't actually care.
While the public interprets the 1983 hit as a testament to John's strength in the face of adversity, Taupin clarifies the original intent was a "sort of kiss off" to an old flame. He describes the sentiment as a simple "Don't you worry about me, I'll be perfectly fine," specifically noting that, unlike other country tropes of the era, he truly did not care about the relationship.
The song's visual identity was forged in the glamorous setting of Cannes and Nice on the Côte d'Azur. Directed by Russell Mulcahy, the music video featured prominent French flag graphics and choreography by Arlene Phillips. The production was famously chaotic: John's initial plan to perform complex moves was scaled back after Phillips was stunned by his disco-honed skills, and a day's worth of film was lost when Mulcahy accidentally fell into the sea with the camera.
The shoot also became a site of legendary excess. While filming, John encountered Duran Duran members, including Andy Taylor. In a series of events described in Taylor's memoir, the band members reportedly got John "so drunk" on martinis that he eventually "threw a wobbler" in his hotel suite, leaving his assistant's room "leveled." Despite this, the song achieved massive success, peaking at No. 1 in Canada and Switzerland, and reaching No. 12 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
