In short: After a life of misery caused by his own kindness, a man is reincarnated with a singular goal: to live as a selfish, evil tyrant. Yet, his attempts to build power and hoard wealth consistently backfire, leaving him perceived by his subjects as a just and exceptionally generous leader.

The story begins with a man whose life was ruined by his own virtue. Betrayed by his cheating wife and framed for embezzlement, he dies only to be approached by a malevolent entity known as the Guide. This entity, which feeds on human misery and despair, offers him a second chance at life in a new world, intending to manipulate him into a life of suffering. However, the plan goes awry when the protagonist, reborn as Liam Banfield, begins to thrive as the lord of his own planet.

Liam’s quest to become a villain is constantly undermined by his own competence. His long-term efforts to develop his fiefdom and strengthen his military are interpreted by the corrupt nobility of the Empire as acts of benevolence. Even his greed for gold is misunderstood; in this new interstellar society, gold is far less valuable than rare materials like mithril and adamantium, making his obsession appear eccentric rather than avaricious. His successes are so frequent that they actually starve the Guide, who feeds on the very negative emotions Liam is supposed to be experiencing.

The irony deepens as Liam remains convinced that the Guide is his benevolent guardian. This misapprehension creates a comedic dynamic where his genuine gratitude further weakens the entity intended to destroy him. Whether he is rescuing victims of pirate gangs or accidentally training under a fraud who taught him nonsensical techniques—only for Liam to miraculously master them—his path to villainy is paved with unintended heroism. Written by Yomu Mishima, the series began as a web novel in 2018 and has since expanded into a successful franchise including light novels, manga, and a 2025 anime adaptation produced by Quad.
