The K-pop group that lived for only one year
In short: In 2016, a reality show transformed 101 trainees into a global phenomenon. I.O.I achieved instant chart-topping success and massive commercial endorsements, yet their entire initial contract was designed to end just months after they began. This is the story of a temporary phenomenon that refused to stay disbanded.
Formed through Mnet's survival show Produce 101, I.O.I was a unique experiment in idol formation. Unlike traditional groups built by agencies, these eleven members—including Jeon So-mi, Kim Se-jeong, and Choi Yoo-jung—were selected by viewers from a pool of 101 trainees representing 46 different companies. While the group was originally slated to debut in April 2016 with a track called "Crush," the debut was postponed to May 4, 2016, to refine their concept.
Their ascent was rapid. Their debut EP, Chrysalis, featured the hit "Dream Girls," and by October 2016, their second EP, Miss Me?, produced the number-one single "Very Very Very." This track, composed by Park Jin-young, moved at a staggering 206 bpm. The group's commercial power was equally immense; by March 2016, they had already secured seven CF deals with an estimated profit of ₩1.4 billion, representing brands ranging from KB Kookmin Bank to SK Telecom.
Despite this momentum, the group's lifespan was strictly finite. Following a period of intense promotion, including a seven-member sub-unit, the group officially disbanded at the end of January 2017. However, the legacy of I.O.I has proven resilient. After years of postponed reunions and hiatuses, the group announced a massive return in 2026 to celebrate their tenth anniversary, releasing the EP I.O.I: Loop and embarking on an Asian concert tour.
The group's history is marked by both triumph and complexity, including the challenges of navigating the legal drinking age in advertisements and the impact of the Mnet vote manipulation investigation on planned reunions. Yet, through it all, the group remains a landmark era in South Korean pop culture.
