India's historic medal haul at the 2024 Paris Olympics
In short: With six medals won in Paris, India achieved its third-best performance in Olympic history. From historic individual milestones to a dominant showing in shooting, the 2024 Games marked a significant chapter for the nation's sporting legacy on the world stage.
The 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, held from 26 July to 11 August, saw India make its 26th appearance at the Games. The Indian contingent was substantial, consisting of 110 athletes competing across 16 different sports. This performance resulted in a total of six medals: one silver and five bronze, ranking India 71st among the 206 participating National Olympic Committees. P.V. Sindhu and Sharath Kamal represented the nation as flag-bearers during the opening ceremony. Additionally, Manu Bhaker and P. R. Sreejesh carried the flag for the closing ceremony.
The Games were defined by several historic individual achievements. Since the country achieved independence, Manu Bhaker has become the first Indian to earn two medals during one Olympics, taking bronze in the women's 10 m air pistol and also in the mixed 10 m air pistol team contest with Sarabjot Singh. Neeraj Chopra, who took gold in 2020, secured a silver medal in the men's javelin throw, becoming the first Indian individual medalist to win both gold and silver. Additionally, wrestler Aman Sehrawat became the youngest ever Indian medal winner, earning a bronze in the men's freestyle 57kg event.
Shooting proved to be a prolific discipline for the nation, accounting for three of the six medals won. These included Manu Bhaker's historic bronze and a bronze for Swapnil Kusale in the men's 50 m rifle three positions event. The men's field hockey team also contributed to the tally, securing a bronze medal after defeating Spain, marking India's second consecutive Olympic bronze in the event. The men's field hockey team's success followed a victory over Spain in the third-place match. This achievement highlighted the squad's consistency in the tournament.
