In short: Every time you scan a product, a complex checksum calculation happens in milliseconds. This system is designed to catch human errors and mechanical glitches instantly, ensuring that a single digit mistake doesn't ruin a global supply chain. It is a masterclass in efficient, error-resistant data encoding.

The International Article Number (EAN) is the global standard for retail barcodes. While it identifies products by manufacturer and packaging, it also incorporates a sophisticated 'check digit' at the end of the sequence. This digit is calculated using a modulo 10 algorithm where weights alternate between 3 and 1. Because these weights are relatively prime to 10, the system is mathematically guaranteed to detect every single-digit error and approximately 90% of transposition errors—where two adjacent digits are swapped.

The encoding is cleverly designed for physical scanning. In EAN-13, the first group of six digits uses two possible encodings: one with even parity and one with odd parity. The first digit of the code is actually encoded indirectly through the combination of these parities. This ensures that the barcode always starts with an odd-parity code and ends with an even-parity code. This symmetry allows scanning software to identify the start and end of a code regardless of which direction it is scanned from.

Efficiency is also a core principle. For manufacturers with few products, the system allows for 'variable-length manufacturer codes.' Instead of wasting thousands of potential codes on a small company, the system can issue a longer manufacturer code to leave more room for product identifiers. Furthermore, specific prefixes like 'Bookland' (978 and 979) were created in the 1980s to reserve space for books globally, preventing the need for redundant numbering systems across different countries.
