A river born from a prehistoric dam burst in days
In short: The Illinois River is a geological anomaly. While most rivers carve paths over millennia, this one was shaped in a matter of days by a catastrophic glacial event. It now serves as a massive, underutilized canyon that carries the industrial weight of the Midwest.
During the melting of the Wisconsin Glacier approximately 18,500 years ago, a massive lake formed in present-day Indiana. This lake was held back by a terminal moraine until the water level rose high enough to breach the natural dam. In a sudden event lasting perhaps only a few days, the entire volume of the lake was released, carving the modern channel of the Illinois River almost instantly.
This violent origin left the river with a unique physical profile: it flows through a deep canyon with distinct rock formations and possesses an 'underutilized channel.' This means the riverbed is significantly larger than what is required to contain the current flow of the modern river. This geological history also links it to the ancient Mississippi; south of Hennepin, the Illinois follows an old Mississippi channel diverted by the Illinoian Stage between 300,000 and 132,000 years ago.
Historically, the river served as the primary water route connecting the Great Lakes to the Mississippi basin. In the 17th and 18th centuries, French colonial settlements along its banks formed the 'Illinois Country.' While it was once a hub for the shell button industry and a primary source of freshwater fish—surpassing all but the Columbia River between 1905 and 1915—it now faces modern challenges. These include an infestation of invasive Asian carp and the ongoing management of sewage overflows from cities like Peoria to meet Clean Water Act requirements.
