How a Dutch academy graduate became an Indonesian football star
In short: After honing his skills in the prestigious Ajax academy, Dutch-born midfielder Ivar Jenner embarked on a remarkable international transition. By embracing his Indonesian heritage, he navigated the naturalization process to represent the Indonesia national team, eventually playing a pivotal role in their historic advancement during the 2023 AFC Asian Cup.
Ivar Jenner’s career began in the Netherlands, where he developed through the IJFC academy in IJsselstein and the renowned Ajax system. In 2016, he moved to Utrecht, a club where he would spend several years. After progressing through the Jong Utrecht side, he was set to join the Utrecht senior team for the 2025–26 season, though his contract with the club was eventually terminated by mutual consent on 2 February 2026.
While Jenner previously represented the Netherlands at the under-15 level, his international trajectory shifted significantly due to his Indonesian heritage. In October 2022, Jenner traveled to Indonesia alongside fellow Dutch-Indonesian player Justin Hubner to undergo the naturalization process. By 22 May 2023, he had officially obtained Indonesian citizenship, allowing him to compete for the Indonesia national team.
His integration into the Indonesian setup was rapid. In late 2022, he featured for the U-20 squad in friendly matches against France and Slovakia. By May 2023, he received a call-up to the senior national team for friendlies against Palestine and Argentina, making his debut on 14 June 2023. Jenner played a key role in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup, appearing in every match as the team reached its first-ever knockout stage.
In addition to senior duties, Jenner's role in Indonesia's youth progression was significant, as he was selected for the under-23 side during the 2024 AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers. During this period, he contributed both a dominant 9–0 victory against Chinese Taipei and a crucial international goal against Turkmenistan.
