In short: Ivan Cleary didn't just rebuild a struggling club; he engineered a dynasty. After a career as a record-breaking point scorer, he returned to the Penrith Panthers to orchestrate a historic run of four consecutive NRL Premierships, becoming a pioneer of modern rugby league dominance.

Cleary's path to the top was defined by a transition from elite play to strategic leadership. As a player in the 1990s and 2000s, he was a prolific goal-kicking fullback, notably setting a record for the most points scored in a single season during the 1998 NRL Premiership with 284 points. His playing career spanned several clubs, including Manly-Warringah, North Sydney Bears, Sydney City Roosters, and the New Zealand Warriors, before he moved into coaching with the Sydney Roosters in 2003.

His coaching journey was marked by significant volatility. After leading the Roosters to a premiership in 2004, he moved to the New Zealand Warriors, where he served as head coach starting in 2005. His tenure in Sydney was later interrupted by a complex departure from the Wests Tigers in 2018. Despite a difficult start at Penrith in 2019, where the team sat bottom of the table, Cleary eventually stabilized the club, securing his first premiership in 2021 after coaching over 370 NRL games.

The 'dynasty' era began in earnest in 2021 and reached a historic peak in 2024. By winning four consecutive Grand Finals (2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024), Cleary became the first coach in the NRL era to achieve such a feat. This run made Penrith the first team since St. George in 1966 to win four straight titles. Cleary is set to step down as head coach after the 2027 season, transitioning into an advisory role while handing the reins to Peter Wallace.

Cleary's influence extends to the next generation, as he is the father of two current players: co-captain Nathan Cleary and Warriors halfback Jett Cleary. His leadership style has been characterized by high-pressure resilience, evidenced by his 2020 season where he guided the Panthers to a 17-game unbeaten streak and a Minor Premiership, despite facing significant scrutiny and fines for public comments regarding officiating.
