In short: Standing 6 feet 8 inches, J. R. Richard was a terrifying presence on the mound for the Houston Astros. He dominated the National League with a fastball that occasionally exceeded 100 miles per hour, but his meteoric rise was cut short by a stroke at the height of his powers.

Born in 1950 in Vienna, Louisiana, J. R. Richard was a multi-sport prodigy who never lost a game he started in high school. After being selected second overall in the 1969 amateur draft, he spent several years refining his mechanics in the minor leagues. His major league debut in 1971 was spectacular, as he tied a record by striking out 15 batters in his first start. However, early in his career, he struggled with control and wildness, which he often attributed to the racial climate of the era.

By 1976, Richard had established himself as the Astros' ace. He became the second pitcher in team history to record 20 wins in a season and joined the 'Black Aces,' an exclusive group of African American pitchers with 20-win seasons. His dominance peaked in 1979, when he led the National League with a 2.71 ERA and 313 strikeouts, becoming one of the few modern pitchers to record consecutive 300-strikeout seasons. Legends like Johnny Bench and Dale Murphy considered him the toughest pitcher they ever faced.

The trajectory of his career shifted violently on July 30, 1980, when he collapsed during a warm-up session due to a stroke caused by a blood clot in his neck. Although he attempted a comeback in 1981, the stroke had permanently impaired his reaction time and depth perception. Released by the Astros in 1984, Richard faced severe personal and financial hardships, including homelessness in 1994, before eventually finding solace as a minister. He was finally inducted into the Houston Astros Hall of Fame in 2019, honoring a legacy that remains etched in the franchise's record books.
