In short: Before becoming an NFL coach, J. T. Barrett was a powerhouse for the Ohio State Buckeyes. A three-time captain and prolific scorer, he rewrote the record books in Columbus, including a career total of 147 touchdowns, before transitioning from a standout player to a professional coach.

Joseph Thomas Barrett IV, born January 23, 1995, established himself as one of the most decorated quarterbacks in Ohio State history. After a high school career cut short by an ACL injury, he arrived in Columbus and eventually became the Buckeyes' first three-time captain. His tenure was marked by incredible statistical output, including 9,434 career passing yards and a single-season high of 3,851 total yards.

His greatest influence occurred within the Big Ten Conference, securing him the Griese–Brees Quarterback of the Year title during 2014, 2016, and 2017. He also secured First-team All-Big Ten honors in each of those three years. He remains the sole quarterback from either participant in the Michigan-Ohio State rivalry to achieve a 4–0 record while starting.

His professional journey began as an undrafted free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 2018. Following stints with the Seattle Seahawks, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Edmonton Elks, Barrett transitioned into coaching. After serving as an offensive assistant and assistant quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions from 2022 to 2024, he was hired by the Chicago Bears as their quarterbacks coach on January 24, 2025.

While his athletic achievements were immense, his collegiate career was not without controversy. In 2015, he was suspended for one game following an arrest for operating a vehicle under the influence. In 2014, police responded to an incident involving an alleged altercation with his pregnant girlfriend, though no charges were filed and no suspension was issued.
