From Alaska to the NFL: The rising trajectory of defensive end Tyree Wilson
In short: Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Tyree Wilson’s path to professional football was anything but linear. After navigating college transfers and significant injuries, the defensive end emerged as a high-value draft pick, proving that resilience is just as vital as raw physical talent on the gridiron.
Tyree Wilson's journey began in Anchorage, Alaska, on May 20, 2000, before his family relocated to Henderson, Texas, in 2002. His formative years in Texas saw him develop into a standout at West Rusk High School. During his senior year, Wilson demonstrated significant defensive prowess, recording 126 tackles, including 38 tackles for loss, alongside five forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries.
His collegiate career was marked by movement and adaptation. Initially a three-star recruit who committed to Washington State, Wilson eventually landed at Texas A&M. After redshirting his true freshman season, he entered the NCAA transfer portal. A crucial NCAA waiver allowed him to play immediately for Texas Tech, where he became a defensive force. His redshirt junior season was particularly impactful, as he led the Red Raiders with 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks, earning him the Defensive MVP title at the 2021 Liberty Bowl.
Despite a season-ending foot injury in 2022 against Kansas, Wilson's talent was undeniable. He bypassed his senior year to enter the 2023 NFL Draft, where the Las Vegas Raiders selected him seventh overall. His professional career has seen consistent defensive production, including a career-high 4.5 sacks in 2024. In April 2026, his career took another turn when the New Orleans Saints acquired him via trade, though the team later declined his fifth-year contract option, setting him up as a free agent.
