In short: In 1970, a plane crash decimated Marshall University's football team. When Jack Lengyel took the helm, he didn't just inherit a depleted roster; he inherited a community in mourning. His mission was to resurrect a program that many believed could never recover.

On November 14, 1970, Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed, claiming the lives of 75 people, including head coach Rick Tolley, 37 players, and numerous university officials and boosters. The devastation left Marshall University's Thundering Herd program in ruins. When athletic director Joe McMullen sought a successor, many established coaches declined the immense burden of the role. Jack Lengyel, however, accepted the challenge.

Lengyel's task was an unprecedented feat of athletic reconstruction. With almost no returning players, he was forced to recruit athletes from the university's baseball and basketball programs and rely heavily on walk-ons to fill the roster. The rebuilding process was grueling; his first season as head coach saw a difficult 9–33 record. Yet, a glimmer of hope emerged when the team secured a 15–13 victory over Xavier, clinching the win with a touchdown on the final play.

Beyond the football field, Lengyel's career spanned decades of athletic administration. He served as the athletic director at prestigious institutions including the United States Naval Academy from 1988 to 2001, and held leadership roles at Fresno State, Missouri, and Colorado Boulder. His leadership at Navy earned him the 2005 John L. Toner Award.

His legacy of empathy was further demonstrated in 2008. Following a tragic van accident in New Brunswick, Canada, that killed a high school basketball team, Lengyel personally funded his travel to assist the grieving community with counseling, drawing parallels to the Marshall tragedy he had navigated decades earlier.
