How a single coaching departure triggered a massive roster reset for Marshall
In short: After winning their first Sun Belt Championship in 2024, the Marshall Thundering Herd faced an unprecedented exodus. A coaching change sent fifty players into the transfer portal, forcing a total program rebuild from the ground up. Now, the Herd is attempting to turn that chaos into a new era of stability.
The landscape of college football shifted dramatically for Marshall following the 2024 season. After capturing the program's first-ever Sun Belt Championship, head coach Charles Huff departed for Southern Miss. This exit triggered a massive roster reset, with fifty players entering the transfer portal and leaving the program in search of new opportunities. This sudden movement followed the team's historic success in the Sun Belt Conference. The departure of Huff left a significant void in the coaching staff.
To counter this exodus, new head coach Tony Gibson was tasked with a total reconstruction. The rebuilding effort involved bringing in 56 transfer additions and 19 new commits. While the program endured a losing 2025 season, the roster has begun to stabilize. A recent NCAA injunction regarding player eligibility has allowed athletes who enrolled in 2022 to play an extra year, providing a critical anchor for the squad. The squad is currently preparing for a significant 2026 campaign. This stability is essential for the team's long-term goals.
This eligibility rule has facilitated the return of key veterans like quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson, a preseason Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year and Davey O’Brien Award watch list member. Alongside him, tight end Toby Payne—a 2026 John Mackey Award watch list candidate—and offensive linemen Jalen Slappy and Tariq Montgomery are entering their fifth years. These returning players are tasked with building a new legacy and providing the cohesion necessary for the program's 2026 championship aspirations. These veteran leaders are essential for the team's development. Their presence helps younger players understand the program's culture.
