In short: After a decade as an NFL quarterback, Jake Plummer walked away from the game at the height of his career. He traded the spotlight for anonymity in Idaho, where he now volunteers for Meals on Wheels, plays competitive handball, and advocates for the therapeutic use of functional mushrooms and cannabis.

Born in 1974 in Boise, Idaho, Jake Plummer rose to prominence as a star quarterback at Arizona State University. His 1996 senior season remains legendary, highlighted by a shutout victory over top-ranked Nebraska and a Rose Bowl appearance. Drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in 1997, he became a local icon, though his professional career was marked by extreme volatility. He was celebrated as a savior in 1998, only to be labeled the league's worst quarterback by Football Outsiders just one year later. Despite this, he led the league in game-tying or winning drives and eventually found stability with the Denver Broncos, where he maintained a 40–18 record.

Plummer’s playing career was defined as much by his personal bonds as his statistics. His deep friendship with teammate Pat Tillman, who left the NFL to join the Army Rangers after 9/11, profoundly shaped his life. Following Tillman’s death in 2004, Plummer honored his friend by growing a beard and wearing his hair long, eventually delivering a eulogy in flip-flops to mirror Tillman’s trademark style. This period also saw Plummer clash with authority, including a public dispute with Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, which culminated in his benching for rookie Jay Cutler in 2006.

In 2007, Plummer stunned the sports world by retiring at age 32, despite being traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. His departure was so abrupt that the team sued to recover his signing bonus, leading to a $3.5 million settlement. Since leaving the NFL, Plummer has embraced a life of relative obscurity, coaching high school football and pursuing interests in mycology and handball. He has become a vocal advocate for cannabis and CBD to treat post-football injuries, even joining the Doctors for Cannabis Regulation steering committee to push for league-wide policy changes.
