In short: Born to volleyball players in Vienna, Jakob Pöltl chose basketball due to a nearby youth program. After a standout collegiate career at Utah, he became the first Austrian player ever drafted into the NBA, eventually building a professional career that spans multiple teams and high-stakes trades.

Pöltl's path to the NBA was paved by a pivotal scouting moment at the 2013 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship in Strumica. Despite Austria's team finishing 20th out of 22 in Division B, Pöltl's performance—including a 15-rebound game against the Netherlands—caught the eye of University of Utah assistant Andy Hill. This connection led Pöltl to the Utah Utes, where he prioritized a U.S. college education to ensure he was ready for the rigors of professional basketball.

During his sophomore season with the Utes in 2015–16, Pöltl emerged as a dominant force. Following his Pac-12 Player of the Year win, he earned two significant honours: the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and the Pete Newell Big Man Award. These accolades recognized him as the premier collegiate center and low-post player, setting the stage for his entry into the professional ranks.

The 2016 NBA draft marked a historic milestone for Austrian basketball when the Toronto Raptors selected Pöltl with the ninth overall pick. Since then, his career has been defined by significant movement and growth. As part of the major Kawhi Leonard trade, he moved to the San Antonio Spurs during July 2018. After five seasons in San Antonio, he returned to Toronto in February 2023, eventually securing a massive four-year, $78 million deal in July 2023 and a subsequent $104 million extension in 2025.

Beyond the court, Pöltl's name has entered popular culture through 'Poeltl,' a word-guessing game released in February 2022. The game challenges players to identify an NBA player based on their silhouette within eight attempts, turning the professional athlete's name into a digital pastime.
