From college standout to NHL defenseman and Stanley Cup playoff contender
In short: After a standout collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, Jake McCabe transitioned from a second-round draft pick to a seasoned professional. His journey through the NHL has been defined by resilience against injuries and a steady evolution from the Buffalo Sabres to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
Born on October 12, 1993, Jake McCabe's ascent began in the high school ranks at Eau Claire Memorial before he moved to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His collegiate tenure with the Wisconsin Badgers was marked by both excellence and adversity; during his first year, a severed finger tendon limited him to just 26 games, but he rebounded to earn a selection to the 2013–14 All-Big Ten First Team during his junior season.
McCabe entered the professional ranks via the 2012 NHL entry draft, where the Buffalo Sabres selected him in the second round as the 44th overall pick. His early years were a test of endurance, involving stints in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans and navigating various injuries, including a concussion in 2015 and a thumb injury in 2018 that required surgery. Despite these setbacks, he established himself as a reliable presence on the ice, eventually serving as an alternate captain for the Sabres.
His career trajectory shifted significantly in 2021 when he signed a four-year, $16 million contract with the Chicago Blackhawks. After undergoing spinal surgery for a herniated disk in 2022, he was traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs on February 27, 2023. In his first full season with Toronto in 2023–24, he achieved a career-high of eight goals and 28 points, proving his value as a key component of the Maple Leafs' roster.
