The winger who broke records while honoring a century of history
In short: In 2012, Jakob Silfverberg didn't just lead his team to a championship; he shattered a long-standing scoring record in the process. His journey from Sweden’s domestic league to the NHL highlights a career defined by high-stakes leadership and deep family roots in professional hockey.
Jakob Silfverberg's rise to prominence began with Brynäs IF, where he became a cornerstone of their success. During the 2011–12 season, his dominance was recognized by his peers when he won both the Guldhjälmen award as the league's most valuable player and the Guldpucken as player of the year. During the postseason, his scoring reached a high point as he netted 13 goals, breaking the prior mark of 12 goals established by Daniel Alfredsson throughout the 2004–05 campaign.
His leadership was tested during the same championship run when he took over as captain following a teammate's injury. To honor the club's 100th anniversary, Silfverberg wore the number 100 on his jersey for the second half of that historic season. His professional path eventually led him to the NHL, where he played for both the Ottawa Senators and the Anaheim Ducks. Despite navigating a lockout and various injuries, including a significant hip injury in 2021, he maintained a steady presence in the league until his retirement announcement in April 2024.
Silfverberg’s career is also a story of lineage. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Jan-Erik, who won four Swedish championships with Brynäs IF, and his uncle Conny, who was a high-scoring Elitserien standout. Beyond club success, Silfverberg represented Sweden on the international stage multiple times, notably earning an Olympic silver medal in Sochi in 2014.
After retiring from the NHL following the 2023–24 season, he returned to his roots by signing a multi-year contract with Brynäs IF, ensuring his continued involvement with the club where his career first took flight.
