How a nickname earned by a single move defined a basketball legend
In short: Jamaal Wilkes, known to fans as "Silk," earned his moniker through a single, effortless motion. A three-time NBA All-Star and four-time champion, his career transitioned from a standout UCLA Bruin to a cornerstone of the Los Angeles Lakers' legendary Showtime era.
Wilkes' journey to basketball stardom was marked by a distinctive fluidity. While playing for the UCLA Bruins, a student observer named Oliver Trigg witnessed a move so graceful that he described it as "smooth as silk." This observation stuck, and by the 1971–72 season, broadcaster Dick Enberg had popularized the nickname on the air.
His collegiate career was defined by dominance under coach John Wooden. As a part of the Bruins, Wilkes helped lead the team to two NCAA championships, including a perfect 30–0 season in 1972. He was a standout performer, averaging 16.7 points per game during his senior year and earning unanimous All-America honors.
In the NBA, Wilkes proved his versatility. After being selected 11th overall in the 1974 draft by the Golden State Warriors, he was named Rookie of the Year and won a championship in his first season. He later moved to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he became a vital component of the "Showtime" era. By moving from power forward to small forward, he was able to flourish in the Lakers' fast break, averaging 20 points per game during the 1979–80 season.
His impact was most visible in high-stakes moments. In Game 6 of the 1980 NBA Finals, Wilkes delivered a career-high 37 points and 10 rebounds. While the spotlight often fell on rookie Magic Johnson, Wilkes' performance was essential to the Lakers' victory, a fact later acknowledged by Johnson himself.
