From mid-major standout to NBA champion and All-Star
In short: Jalen Williams, known as 'J-Dub,' has rapidly ascended from Santa Clara to the pinnacle of professional basketball. After being drafted 12th overall in 2022, he has transformed from a highly efficient rookie into an All-NBA selection and a championship winner with the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Williams' journey to the NBA began at Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, where he grew five inches between his sophomore and senior years. After being ranked 9th among Arizona prep players by 247Sports, he committed to Santa Clara over offers from Nevada and Hofstra. During his collegiate career, he emerged as a premier scorer, averaging 18.0 points per game in his final season while shooting 51.3%.
Selected 12th overall in the 2022 NBA draft—a pick acquired from the Clippers via the Paul George trade—Williams made an immediate impact. Following in the footsteps of Josh Giddey and Russell Westbrook, he was the third rookie from the Thunder to earn Rookie of the Month awards. His rookie campaign saw him average 14.1 points and finish second in NBA Rookie of the Year voting.
The 2024–2025 season marked a historic breakthrough. Williams earned his first All-Star selection and an All-NBA Third Team spot. He played a pivotal role in the Oklahoma City Thunder's 2025 championship run, notably scoring 40 points in a Game 5 victory against the Indiana Pacers. To endure the rigors of the postseason, Williams required approximately 30 painkilling injections for a wrist injury.
Despite his rapid success, his trajectory has faced physical hurdles. Following his championship win, he underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right wrist, and during the 2025–2026 season, injuries caused him to miss more than half of the regular-season games.
