The rare athlete who conquered Minnesota's football and basketball crowns in one year
In short: Before becoming an NBA star for the Orlando Magic, Jalen Suggs achieved a feat of versatility unmatched in Minnesota history. By dominating both the hardwood and the gridiron, he proved himself a premier dual-threat talent, eventually transitioning from a high-stakes college buzzer-beater to a cornerstone of a professional franchise.
Jalen Suggs' ascent began in Minneapolis at Minnehaha Academy, where he demonstrated elite versatility long before entering the NBA. While he is now known as a professional basketball player, he was also a standout football quarterback for the SMB Wolfpack. In 2018, he led that cooperative football team to a Class 4A state championship, and by his senior year, he was named Minnesota Mr. Football. Combined with his basketball honours, this feat made him the inaugural athlete in Minnesota to secure both Mr. Basketball and Mr. Football titles within a single school year.
His basketball trajectory was equally prolific. During his final year of high school, Suggs departed Minnehaha Academy having scored a record 2,945 career points. He was a consensus five-star recruit, with ESPN ranking him as the fifth-best player in the 2020 class. Such talent brought him to Gonzaga University, where he arrived as the program's highest-ranked recruit. His collegiate career was defined by high-pressure moments, most notably a 40-foot, three-point buzzer-beater in the 2021 NCAA tournament that sent the Bulldogs to the championship game.
Entering the NBA, Suggs was selected fifth overall in the 2021 draft by the Orlando Magic. His professional career has been marked by both offensive flashes and physical resilience. After overcoming a fractured thumb and ankle surgery, he has established himself as a defensive force, earning a spot on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team. In late 2024, he secured his future with the Magic through a five-year, $150.5 million contract extension, cementing his status as a core piece of the franchise.
