The rare feat of scoring a touchdown off Aaron Rodgers
In short: In the high-stakes world of NFL defense, certain feats are so difficult they become historic milestones. Jamel Dean achieved one of them in 2020: becoming only the third player in history to ever record a pick-six against Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Jamel Dean's path to the NFL was defined by resilience. After being medically disqualified at Ohio State, he transferred to Auburn in 2015. Despite a collegiate career hampered by injuries, his performance earned him a spot on Bruce Feldman's 'college football freaks' list before he declared for the 2019 draft. He was eventually selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round (94th overall) with a four-year, $3.55 million contract.
Dean's rookie season was a trial by fire. Initially listed as a backup, he saw significant playing time only after starting cornerback Carlton Davis suffered a hip injury in November 2019. During that period, he faced heavy targeting from Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. However, he quickly adapted, recording his first career interception against Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals and eventually earning a starting role by Week 12.
The pinnacle of his early career came on October 18, 2020. During a game against the Green Bay Packers, Dean intercepted a pass from Aaron Rodgers intended for Davante Adams. He returned the ball 32 yards for a touchdown—a 'pick-six' that joined only Tanard Jackson and William Jackson III in the history books as players to accomplish the feat against Rodgers. This moment solidified his role as a primary starter under head coach Todd Bowles.
Since then, Dean has become a cornerstone of the Buccaneers' secondary. He signed a significant four-year extension in March 2023 worth $52 million with $24.5 million guaranteed. Throughout his tenure, he has consistently balanced high-volume tackling with pass deflections, maintaining a steady presence as a reliable starter in one of the league's most demanding positions.
