From Irish schoolboy to Serie A star: the meteoric rise of James Abankwah
In short: At just 14, he was signing for a professional academy. By 17, he was making history in a major cup final. Now, the Irish defender is carving out a path through Europe's top leagues, proving that elite talent can transcend borders.
James Abankwah’s journey is a testament to rapid progression. Born in Waterford to Ghanaian missionaries, his early years were marked by frequent moves across Ireland, from Letterkenny to Longford and eventually Dublin. His footballing ascent began in earnest when he joined St Patrick's Athletic's academy at age 14 in 2019. That year proved transformative; he helped the Under-15 side secure both the League of Ireland title and the Under-15 Cup.
His transition to senior football was equally swift. By 17, Abankwah had made his professional debut for St Patrick's Athletic and became the youngest player ever to appear in an FAI Cup Final, playing before a record crowd of 37,126 at the Aviva Stadium. His defensive prowess even drew comparisons to the legendary Paul McGrath. This precocity caught the eye of Italian scouts, leading to a high-profile transfer to Serie A club Udinese in early 2022 for a fee believed to be around €800,000.
Since moving to Italy, Abankwah has navigated the complexities of professional development through various loan spells, including stints at Charlton Athletic and Watford. While his career has seen him move between the League One, Championship, and Serie A, his impact remains significant. He has also become a cornerstone of the Republic of Ireland's international setup, progressing from the U15s to captaining the U21 side and eventually earning his senior international debut in 2026.
