The journeyman striker who mastered the art of the promotion climb
In short: From the Aston Villa academy to the heights of the Championship, James Collins has built a career defined by clinical finishing and a relentless knack for rising through the divisions. Discover how this prolific striker navigated the English and Scottish leagues to become a specialist in promotion.
Born in Coventry in 1990, James Collins began his professional journey within the Aston Villa academy. While he did not break into the first team, his early years were marked by a prolific scoring record, netting 23 goals for the academy and earning a loan move to Darlington in 2009. His early career was a whirlwind of short-term spells, including an impactful but brief stint at Burton Albion in 2010, where his performances earned him a League Two Player of the Month nomination.
Collins' career is defined by his ability to secure upward mobility for his clubs. Four separate climbs from England's fourth division have marked his career, including two runner-up finishes at Shrewsbury Town, one title win at Northampton Town, and a recent success with Luton Town. His success extends to the third tier, where he earned promotion as a champion with Luton and as a runner-up with Derby County.
His scoring prowess has often made him a club's primary offensive threat. At Swindon Town, he finished the season as the top scorer, and he repeated this feat at Shrewsbury Town. During his tenure at Luton Town, he was named the League One Player of the Year for the 2018–19 season after scoring 25 goals. Even during difficult periods, such as his time at Hibernian, he remained a notable figure, scoring crucial goals in the Scottish Premiership.
Beyond the English leagues, Collins represented the Republic of Ireland at the under-19 and under-21 levels, eventually making his senior international debut and scoring against Bulgaria in 2019. Despite facing significant physical setbacks, including a knee injury in 2024 that required platelet therapy to accelerate healing, he has remained a vital figure in the EFL, recently continuing his journey with Lincoln City and Doncaster Rovers.
