Before becoming a South Korean star, Jang Dong-yoon thwarted an armed convenience store robbery.
In short: Jang Dong-yoon is a celebrated South Korean actor known for his diverse roles in television and film. Yet, his path to fame began with an act of real-life heroism in 2015, when his quick thinking led to the arrest of an armed robber, ultimately launching his unexpected entertainment career.
Born on July 12, 1992, Jang Dong-yoon initially followed a conventional path, completing his mandatory military service between 2012 and 2014. While studying at Hanyang University in 2015, he gained public attention for his bravery. After encountering an armed individual threatening a store clerk in Seoul's Gwanak District, Jang devised a plan that resulted in the culprit's capture. The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency recognized his actions with a commendation, and the resulting media coverage brought him to the attention of talent scouts.
Jang debuted as an actor in 2016 with the web drama Women at a Game Company. His career quickly gained momentum, leading to roles in teen dramas like School 2017 and historical series such as The Tale of Nokdu, where his performance as a cross-dressing protagonist earned him significant acclaim. Over the following years, he demonstrated versatility by taking on roles ranging from a military dog handler in the thriller Search to a psychopath serial killer in the 2023 film Devils.
Despite his professional success, Jang has navigated complex public challenges. In 2021, he was the first actor to issue a public apology following the cancellation of the drama Joseon Exorcist due to historical inaccuracies. More recently, in 2026, his announcement of his marriage to actress Kim Seung-yun sparked controversy regarding a crowdfunding campaign for his directorial project, Nuruk. Some fans expressed frustration, claiming they were misled into supporting a film featuring his partner without prior disclosure of their relationship, highlighting the delicate intersection of personal life and fan engagement in the industry.
