The woman who broke the glass ceiling of British music radio
In short: Before she was a household name, Janice Long was a pioneer in a male-dominated industry. As the first woman to host a daily music show on BBC Radio 1 and a regular on Top of the Pops, she didn't just play the hits—she paved the way for every female DJ who followed.
That same year, she broke television barriers as the first woman to become a regular host on the iconic chart show Top of the Pops, where she frequently co-presented alongside the legendary John Peel.
Long was a tastemaker with a keen ear for emerging talent. She was known for securing live sessions with artists before they reached mainstream popularity. Her influence was profound; she was the first presenter to give Amy Winehouse airtime, and she championed numerous unsigned bands. Her commitment to the craft was recognized in 2016 when the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors awarded her a Gold Badge for her contributions to the music industry.
Her career spanned diverse platforms, from the breakfast show on BBC Radio London to hosting 'A Long Walk With...' on BBC Radio 2, where she interviewed 80s and 90s popstars about their careers. She also co-founded Crash FM in 1995, an alternative station designed to be Liverpool's answer to XFM. Long passed away in December 2021, leaving a legacy as a 'vibrant trailblazer' who bridged the gap between underground scenes and national broadcasting.
Beyond her broadcasting, Long was a public figure who received an honorary doctorate from Edge Hill University in 2018. Her life was a testament to the power of music as a vehicle for cultural change, moving from a local Liverpool radio assistant in 1979 to a national icon who helped shape the sound of modern Britain.
