How a converted wide receiver became a Super Bowl dual-threat anomaly
In short: Most NFL wide receivers focus solely on catching the ball. But Jauan Jennings has rewritten the script. From a high school quarterback to a Super Bowl standout, his career is defined by rare versatility and a knack for finding the end zone in the game's biggest moments.
Jauan Jennings' journey to professional stardom began with a significant positional shift. While he played quarterback during his time at Blackman High School in Tennessee, he transitioned to wide receiver during his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee between 2015 and 2019. This versatility became a hallmark of his playstyle, allowing him to execute complex trick plays that caught defenses off guard.
This dual-threat capability reached its peak on the grandest stage. During Super Bowl LVIII, Jennings achieved a rare statistical feat: he caught a touchdown pass and threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to Christian McCaffrey. This performance made him only the second player in Super Bowl history to record both a receiving and a passing touchdown, joining Nick Foles, who accomplished the feat in Super Bowl LII.
Jennings' professional path has been marked by resilience and sudden rises in production. Following his 2020 NFL draft selection by the San Francisco 49ers in round seven, he developed through the practice squad to become a vital part of the offence. By 2024, following injuries to other primary receivers, he emerged as the team's leading wide receiver, recording a career-high 975 yards and 77 receptions, falling just short of a 1,000-yard season due to an ejection in Week 18.
His career has also seen significant financial and roster shifts. After signing a $15.4 million extension with the 49ers in 2024, he requested a trade during the 2025 offseason. However, the team declined the request, eventually restructuring his contract to include performance incentives. In May 2026, Jennings moved to the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year deal worth up to $13 million.
