In short: Javon Hargrave entered the NFL as a raw talent with critics questioning his physical frame. Yet, he transformed from a third-round pick into a premier defensive tackle, securing massive contracts and proving his worth on the game's biggest stage.

Javon DeAndre Hargrave's journey began at South Carolina State University, where he emerged as a dominant force in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. During his junior year in 2014, he recorded 16 sacks, tying an FCS record during a game against Bethune-Cookman. His college play boosted his draft value, resulting in the Pittsburgh Steelers picking him 89th overall during the 2016 NFL draft. During his time with the Bulldogs, he earned consecutive first-team All-MEAC honours. His impressive collegiate performance helped him rise as the 11th best defensive tackle prospect in his draft class.

Despite early skepticism regarding his short arms and stocky frame, Hargrave established himself as a starting nose tackle for the Steelers. His professional career has been marked by significant financial milestones and high-pressure appearances. In 2020, he signed a three-year, $39 million contract with the Philadelphia Eagles, eventually leading to a career-best 2021 season with 7.5 sacks and 63 combined tackles. This performance earned him a Pro Bowl selection as an injury replacement for Kenny Clark. He initially joined the Eagles after competing for the starting role against Daniel McCullers. His standout 2021 campaign showcased his versatility through high totals in both sacks and quarterback hits.

Hargrave's career has since taken him through several high-profile roles. After reaching Super Bowl LVII with the Eagles, he signed a four-year, $84 million deal with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. He participated in Super Bowl LVIII, recording one sack and one fumble recovery in a narrow loss to the Chiefs. His career has continued through stints with the Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers, illustrating the resilience required to sustain a high-level professional football career. Following his time in San Francisco, he moved to the Minnesota Vikings on a lucrative two-year deal. He eventually signed with the Green Bay Packers in early 2026.
