The NBA's most decorated journeyman and his historic Olympic legacy
In short: From a controversial triple-double to three NBA championships, JaVale McGee's career is a masterclass in resilience. Beyond the highlights, he holds a unique place in sports history, sharing a rare Olympic milestone with his mother, a WNBA gold medalist.
JaVale McGee's professional journey is defined by an extraordinary ability to find success across diverse rosters. A standout for the Nevada Wolf Pack, McGee entered the NBA in 2008 as the 18th overall pick by the Washington Wizards. While his career has seen him traverse numerous teams—including the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, and Golden State Warriors—his trophy case is remarkably heavy, boasting three NBA championships: two consecutive titles with the Warriors in 2017 and 2018, and a third with the Lakers in 2020.
His career has been punctuated by both spectacular feats and intense scrutiny. In 2011, he achieved a rare feat in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest, becoming the first player to use three basketballs simultaneously in a single jump, a feat recognized by Guinness World Records. However, he has also faced criticism, such as after a 2011 performance where he recorded 12 blocks and 12 rebounds but was labeled by commentator Kevin McHale as having a "bad triple-double" due to ill-advised late-game scoring attempts.
Beyond the court, McGee's legacy is deeply intertwined with his family's athletic excellence. In 2021, he won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA, making him and his mother, Pamela McGee, the first mother and son in history to both hold Olympic gold medals. This lineage of excellence continues through his half-sister, Imani, a professional WNBA player. Even as a global traveler playing in leagues from China to Australia, McGee remains a figure of significant historical note in the basketball world.
