From homelessness in D.C. to a multi-million dollar NFL defensive star
In short: Before becoming a high-stakes NFL defensive tackle, Javon Kinlaw faced the instability of homelessness. His journey from the streets of Washington, D.C. to a massive contract with the Washington Commanders is a testament to resilience and elite athletic talent.
Born on 3 October 1997, Javon Kinlaw’s path to professional football was marked by significant early adversity. Following his move from Trinidad and Tobago alongside his mother and two siblings, he faced homelessness during his youth in Washington, D.C. He eventually moved to South Carolina, attending Goose Creek High School before beginning his collegiate career with the Jones County Bobcats in Mississippi. His family originally emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago. He later attended high school in South Carolina.
Kinlaw transferred to the University of South Carolina in 2017, where he became a standout defensive force. During his tenure with the Gamecocks, he demonstrated increasing dominance, recording 38 tackles and 4.5 sacks in 2018. This performance propelled him to the 2020 NFL draft, where the San Francisco 49ers selected him in the first round with the 14th overall pick. His rookie contract with the 49ers, signed on 26 June 2020, was worth $15.48 million and fully guaranteed. He played his first college season in Mississippi. The 49ers acquired his draft position through a trade with the Buccaneers.
His professional career has been a mix of high-impact plays and injury setbacks. While he has faced stints on injured reserve, such as in late 2021 and late 2022, his talent has remained evident. After stints with the 49ers and the New York Jets, Kinlaw signed a major three-year contract with the Washington Commanders on 14 March 2025. Valued at up to $45 million with $30 million guaranteed, this agreement solidifies his reputation as a top-tier defensive tackle within the league. During his time with the Jets, he recorded 4.5 sacks. He also achieved his first career interception and touchdown as a rookie.
