From bicycle rims to EuroLeague stardom: the meteoric rise of Jean Montero
In short: Before he was an elite professional, Jean Montero was playing basketball in Santo Domingo using the wheels of an old bicycle as a rim. Today, the Dominican star has transitioned from makeshift courts to the highest levels of European basketball, proving that raw talent can overcome any lack of resources.
Born in Santo Domingo on July 3, 2003, Montero’s journey began in the Villa Juana sector. After playing with his cousin using a bicycle wheel for a rim, he began serious training at age 10 or 11 with Club DOSA. His skill showed early on; at just 14, he competed for the Dominican Republic during the 2017 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship.
His ascent through the ranks was rapid. Even though he was a year younger than others, he earned MVP status at the 2019 Basketball Without Borders Americas camp in Medellín. That same year, he dominated the Valencia Tournament with Gran Canaria's under-18 team, recording 30 points, six rebounds, and seven assists in a title-winning performance against Unicaja.
Montero's professional career has been defined by high-scoring versatility. After a stint with Overtime Elite, where he led the league in scoring with 16.9 points per game, he moved through several top Spanish Liga ACB clubs, including Real Betis Baloncesto and BC Andorra. By the 2024–25 season with Valencia, he was leading the team in both points (13.2) and assists (5.3) per game.
His recent trajectory has seen him reach the pinnacle of European competition. After winning the Liga ACB with Valencia in 2026, he signed with Olympiacos of the Greek Basketball League in July 2026. From the streets of Santo Domingo to the EuroLeague, Montero has become a cornerstone of Dominican international basketball.
