In short: Before he was a genre-shattering polymath, David Sanders spent his childhood crossing the US-Mexico border in the dark. These long, early-morning bus rides through San Diego and Tijuana became the foundation for a musical identity that blends West Coast hip hop with Britpop and grunge.

Born David Sanders on December 22, 1995, the artist known as Jean Dawson carries a heritage that mirrors his sonic complexity. With an African-American father from Long Beach and a Mexican mother from Sinaloa, his upbringing was defined by movement between San Diego, California, and Tijuana, Mexico. To attend elementary school in the US, he began waking up at 3 a.m. to endure daily border crossings. These solitary, pre-dawn commutes provided the space for him to immerse himself in a diverse musical palette, ranging from new wave and the Smiths to rock en español.

Dawson's path to stardom was marked by resourcefulness and a refusal to be confined by genre. Growing up in poverty, he could not afford instruments, instead traveling by bus to a local Guitar Center to practice piano after school. His early creative output, such as the project Bad Sports recorded in a college dorm with roommate Lecx Stacy, drew from a wide array of influences, including Outkast, The Cure, and Kanye West. This eclectic approach eventually led him to drop out of California State University, Los Angeles, to pursue music via his own label, P+.

Today, his work is often categorized as experimental pop, though he famously resists such labels, citing Prince as an example of an artist who simply transcended categorization. His discography, including albums like Pixel Bath and Glimmer of God, navigates heavy themes such as anxiety, spirituality, and the complexities of Black identity. From directing his own documentary, Burnout, to launching the Turbo Radio clothing line, Dawson continues to blend visual and sonic storytelling into a singular, boundary-breaking career.
