How a spinal cord injury ended the career of an NFL standout
In short: Jermichael Finley was a powerhouse for the Green Bay Packers, a versatile athlete who dominated on the field. However, a devastating collision in 2013 changed his life forever, leading to a spinal cord contusion and a difficult battle to regain mobility, ultimately forcing him into retirement.
Jermichael Finley's rise through football was marked by exceptional versatility and academic achievement. A standout at Diboll High School in Texas, he played everything from tight end and defensive end to kicker and punter. His talent earned him a four-star ranking from Rivals.com and multiple scholarships, including offers from Texas, Arizona, and Texas A&M. Following a successful stint playing for the Texas Longhorns, Finley joined the NFL in 2008 as a third-round pick for the Green Bay Packers.
Finley became a key component of the Packers' offense, notably setting a franchise playoff record with 159 receiving yards against the Arizona Cardinals in a Wild Card round. His momentum was halted during the 2013 season. In a Week 7 matchup against the Cleveland Browns, a helmet-to-helmet collision with safety Tashaun Gipson left Finley with a bruised spinal cord. The injury, later diagnosed as a spinal cord contusion, resulted in immediate paralysis and a loss of feeling in his legs.
The aftermath of the injury was a period of intense physical and mental struggle. Despite training five hours a day in hopes of an NFL comeback, Finley faced challenges with contract offers and failed physicals. In October 2014, he filed a claim on his $10 million insurance policy. He officially announced his retirement from professional football on October 19, 2015. After sixteen years away from campus, Finley achieved his Bachelor of Science at the University of Texas at Austin in 2024 through immense persistence.
