How a devastating knee injury failed to derail a professional football career
In short: In the 2003 Fiesta Bowl, a single hit turned Willis McGahee's left knee into a swivel joint. Experts projected him as a late third-round pick due to the grueling rehabilitation ahead. Yet, the former All-American would go on to become one of the NFL's highest-paid running backs.
The injury occurred during the 2003 Fiesta Bowl National Championship Game, where McGahee suffered torn ACL, PCL, and MCL ligaments after a hit by Buckeye safety Will Allen. This catastrophic injury forced him to miss the entire 2003 NFL season. Despite the damage, McGahee made a significant financial decision: he declined a $2.5 million insurance policy taken out before the game, choosing instead to enter the 2003 NFL draft to pursue his professional career. This decision allowed him to enter the draft as a first-round selection. He was eventually taken 23rd overall by the Buffalo Bills.
His resilience was evident during his rookie season in 2004 with the Buffalo Bills. After a year of intensive rehabilitation, he was named the PFWA Comeback Player of the Year. He finished that season with 1,128 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, proving his durability and skill at the professional level. He achieved this success by recording 284 carries and 22 receptions during his debut year. This performance earned him a spot as a first-team All-Big East selection during his collegiate years.
McGahee's career saw him move from the Bills to the Baltimore Ravens in 2007, where he signed a seven-year, $40.12 million contract. During his four seasons in Baltimore, he amassed over 3,300 total yards from scrimmage and scored 35 regular season touchdowns, including 31 rushing touchdowns. His ability to adapt—even when competing for carries against players like Ray Rice—cemented his legacy as a versatile offensive weapon in the NFL. He achieved this by recording 294 carries and 1,207 rushing yards in his first year with the team. His versatility was further highlighted by his ability to secure a Pro Bowl selection in 2007.
