In short: Before he became an NFL head coach known for high-stakes gambles, Jim Fassel occupied a unique place in sports history. He stood on the field as the literal final quarterback of the World Football League, throwing the very last pass before the organization collapsed into history.

Jim Fassel's path to NFL leadership was paved with diverse roles across several leagues. After a brief playing career with the Chicago Bears and other teams in 1972, he moved into coaching. In 1974, he joined The Hawaiians of the World Football League (WFL). He spent that season balancing duties as both a quarterback and an offensive assistant coach before the league's ultimate demise.

Fassel holds a distinct historical footnote: he threw the final pass in the WFL's history during its last game on October 22, 1975. The league folded just three days later. This experience served as a precursor to a long coaching career that included stints at Stanford University—where he worked with John Elway—and various NFL roles with the Arizona Cardinals and Denver Broncos before taking the helm of the New York Giants in 1997.

His tenure in New York was defined by dramatic swings. In 2000, facing heavy criticism after a 7–4 start, Fassel delivered a famous "poker game" speech, guaranteeing a playoff berth. The team won five straight games to reach the NFC Championship. However, his legacy remains complex; while he turned around a struggling franchise in 1997 and won NFL Coach of the Year honors, his teams were also noted for significant regular-season disappointments and a costly late-game collapse against the San Francisco 49ers in 2002.

Following his time with the Giants, Fassel transitioned through various roles, including an offensive consultancy for the Baltimore Ravens and coaching in the United Football League (UFL). He eventually moved into broadcasting as a color commentator before passing away in 2021 at the age of 71.
