The NFL's first versatile 'Swiss Army knife' was a family affair
In short: Kevin Faulk didn't just play football; he dismantled the traditional boundaries of the running back position. Known as a human multi-tool, he became a cornerstone of three Super Bowl titles while simultaneously setting records in rushing, receiving, and kick returns—all while navigating a career defined by extreme versatility.
Before entering the NFL, Kevin Faulk established himself as a powerhouse at LSU. In 1996, he famously orchestrated a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback against the Houston Cougars, rushing for a school record 246 yards on just 21 carries to turn a 34–14 deficit into a 35–34 victory. His collegiate career was so dominant that he finished second in SEC history for rushing yards and first in the conference for all-purpose yards, totaling 6,833 yards across four seasons.
Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1999, Faulk earned the nickname "Swiss Army knife" for his ability to contribute on nearly every snap. While not always the primary feature back, he was a vital component of the team's offensive and special teams depth. During the 2002 campaign, he performed a singular act by scoring several scores across three distinct types—rushing, receiving, and kick returns—marking him as the sole athlete to do so for both his team and the league that year.
His longevity was marked by both accolades and personal hurdles. He became the Patriots' all-time leader in all-purpose yards (12,140) by 2009 and was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2016. Despite a career interrupted by an ACL tear in 2010 and a brief suspension in 2008, Faulk transitioned into coaching at LSU before returning to the NFL as a running backs intern for the New York Giants in 2022.
Beyond his professional stats, Faulk's legacy is intertwined with family. He is the cousin of fellow NFL Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk and former player Trev Faulk. His personal life has also been marked by profound tragedy; he lost two daughters, Kevione in 2021 and Tanasha in 2025, both of whom were tied to his home state of Louisiana.
