The head coach who admitted he would leave his NFL job for a dream role
In short: In 2006, while leading the Atlanta Falcons, Jim L. Mora made a radio comment that stunned his franchise. He confessed that if offered, he would take the University of Washington job, even during a playoff run. It was a moment of raw honesty that cost him his professional standing.
Jim L. Mora’s career has been defined by high-stakes transitions between the NFL and college football. During his tenure as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2004 to 2006, Mora achieved significant success, leading the team to an 11–5 record and an NFC Championship Game appearance. He even earned the NFC Coach of the Year award. His career security faltered in December 2006 after he told Seattle's KJR-AM that he remained "dead serious" regarding his interest in leading the Washington Huskies, irrespective of the Falcons' post-season prospects.
The fallout was immediate. Falcons owner Arthur Blank publicly expressed disapproval of the comments, and Mora was fired following the 2006 season. This period of volatility followed a period of statistical oddity for the Falcons; before 2009, the franchise had famously failed to achieve back-to-back winning seasons for 40 years. Mora's departure from Atlanta led him to the Seattle Seahawks, where he served as assistant head coach before being named the franchise's seventh head coach in 2009.
Mora's trajectory later saw him find significant success in the collegiate ranks. At UCLA, from 2012 to 2017, he transformed recruiting classes, moving them from the high 40s to as high as No. 11. His time at the University of Connecticut, beginning in 2021, also saw notable resurgence, including a 9–4 season in 2024 and a bowl win against North Carolina. Despite the controversies of his NFL years, Mora has remained a prominent figure, moving from the sidelines to roles as an analyst for NFL Network, Fox Sports, and ESPN.
