How Jin Boyang Ignited a Quadruple Jump Revolution in Men's Figure Skating
In short: Born in Harbin, Jin Boyang transformed figure skating by pioneering the use of multiple quadruple jumps in single programs. As the first skater to land six quads in international competition, he pushed the sport into a new era of technical difficulty, forever altering the landscape of men's singles skating.
Born on October 3, 1997, Jin Boyang began his journey on the ice at age seven and a half after watching a performance by Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo. Despite early parental hesitation due to his academic success, his natural aptitude for dance and movement soon secured their support. By age 14, he had mastered the quadruple toe loop, and by 15, he added the quadruple Salchow, setting the stage for his rapid ascent in the sport.
Jin is widely recognized as a catalyst for the modern revolution in figure skating, defined by the aggressive pursuit of quadruple jumps. He achieved several historic milestones, including being the first athlete to successfully execute a quad Lutz-triple toe loop sequence in a competitive setting. His technical prowess allowed him to become the first skater to land four quads in a single program and the first to land three distinct types of quadruple jumps in one routine. These feats earned him the nickname Golden Boy, a play on his surname, Jin, which translates to gold.
His career is marked by consistent excellence on the international stage. He is a two-time World bronze medalist, securing China's first-ever men's singles medal at the World Championships in 2016. In 2018, he claimed his first senior international gold at the Four Continents Championships, where he achieved a personal best total score of 300.95. Throughout his career, he has represented China at three Winter Olympics, consistently pushing the boundaries of what is physically possible on the ice.
