From defensive standout to championship-winning head coach
In short: Jimmy Rogers’ ascent through the ranks of American football is a masterclass in defensive precision. After a prolific playing career as a linebacker, he transitioned from a graduate assistant to a national champion, eventually navigating high-stakes contract buyouts to lead Iowa State.
Born in Chandler, Arizona, Rogers first gained prominence at Hamilton High School, where he was a standout defensive player in 2004. His high school career was marked by significant individual statistics, including 320 tackles, 16 sacks, and eight interceptions, while contributing to back-to-back state titles. This defensive prowess carried into his collegiate years at South Dakota State University (2005–2009). As a player, he was a prolific tackler, notably recording 110 tackles in 2007 to lead both his team and the Great West Football Conference.
Rogers’ coaching trajectory is defined by a rapid rise through the ranks of the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. After serving as a graduate assistant from 2010 to 2011, he returned to the program in 2013 as a linebackers coach. By 2019, his responsibilities expanded to include roles as co-defensive coordinator and assistant head coach. His tenure as the sole defensive coordinator in 2022 was particularly impactful; he led a defense that ranked first in the FCS in rushing defense and interceptions, earning him the FCS Coordinator of the Year award and a national championship.
The latter part of Rogers' career has been characterized by significant movement between major programs. Following his success at SDSU, he was named the head coach at Washington State University in late 2024. After a single season leading the Cougars to a bowl game and a 6–6 record, he transitioned to Iowa State University in 2025. This move involved a $4 million contract buyout from Washington State. His tenure at Iowa State began with a decisive 38-10 victory over South East Missouri State in September 2026, marking a new chapter in his coaching legacy.
