How a mythological TV debut transformed into a Bengali cinema powerhouse
In short: Jisshu Sengupta’s career began with a religious role that brought instant recognition. Yet, his path to becoming one of Bengali cinema's most sought-after actors was far from linear, marked by a string of unsuccessful projects before a pivotal creative partnership changed everything.
Born Biswaroop Sengupta on 15 March 1977 in Calcutta, the actor's career began with the 1998 television series Mahaprabhu. His portrayal of the younger Chaitanya Mahaprabhu provided immediate recognition, though his subsequent transition to the silver screen via the 1999 film Priyojon proved to be a box office debacle. This pattern of commercial and critical struggle continued through several projects, including his 2002 role as Thakur in Sukanta Roy's Chelebela.
A significant turning point arrived through his collaboration with director Rituparno Ghosh. Working with Ghosh on films such as Abohomaan, Shob Charitro Kalponik, and Noukadubi helped Sengupta achieve a higher degree of critical and commercial success. His role in Shob Charitro Kalponik stood out, especially since that 2009 Bengali production secured the National Film Award for Best Feature Film.
Sengupta has since become a versatile presence across multiple industries. He made his Bollywood debut in 2004 with Shyam Benegal's National Award-winning Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero. He has also achieved significant commercial success in recent years with films like Zulfiqar (2016) and the detective series Byomkesh Bakshi (2015). Beyond acting, he is a producer and a prominent television presenter, notably hosting various shows for Star Jalsha.
His influence extends into sports and philanthropy as well. He was the brainchild of the Bengal Cricket League, which began on 26 December 2015, and he has captained the Bengal Tigers in the Celebrity Cricket League, leading them to victory in the 2024 edition.
