From fast food to NFL stardom: the unconventional rise of receiver Joe Horn
In short: Before becoming a four-time Pro Bowl selection, Joe Horn was working at a fast food restaurant, unable to qualify for Division I college football. After two years away from the game, he used a Jerry Rice workout video to train himself, eventually launching a career that redefined the New Orleans Saints.
Born on January 16, 1972, Joe Horn faced significant early hurdles. Despite being a standout athlete in high school, his academic performance prevented him from joining a Division I program. He spent two years at Itawamba Community College before returning to Fayetteville, North Carolina, to work at a Bojangles' restaurant and a furniture factory. During this two-year hiatus from football, Horn purchased a workout video featuring Jerry Rice. He meticulously studied the drills, filmed his own highlight tape, and sent it to professional teams across the United States and Canada.
His persistence paid off when he signed with the Memphis Mad Dogs of the Canadian Football League in 1995. His performance there caught the attention of NFL scouts, leading the Kansas City Chiefs to draft him in 1996. However, it was his move to the New Orleans Saints in 2000 that cemented his legacy. Known as "Hollywood" for his distinctive style, Horn became a central figure for the franchise, setting multiple records including 50 career receiving touchdowns and 27 games with over 100 receiving yards. His tenure was marked by both on-field brilliance and memorable antics, such as his infamous 2003 cell phone touchdown celebration.
Beyond his athletic achievements, Horn’s life has been complex. He was a vocal advocate for New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina but later faced legal challenges. In 2019, he was charged with defrauding the NFL’s retiree health care plan, eventually pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit health care fraud in 2019 and receiving three years of probation in 2021. Today, his legacy continues through his family, including his son Jaycee, who was selected 8th overall in the 2021 NFL draft, and his own post-football ventures, such as his "Bayou 87" barbecue sauce brand.
