In short: Most NFL head coaches follow a traditional path, but Joe Judge took a rare route. After winning three Super Bowls as a special teams coordinator for the New England Patriots, he was hired to lead the New York Giants, becoming only the second coach in history to make that direct leap.

Joe Judge’s coaching journey is defined by an unusual ascent. After playing as a backup quarterback and special teams player for Mississippi State from 2000 to 2004, he moved into coaching as a graduate assistant in 2005. His tenure with the New England Patriots, which began in 2012, saw him rise from a special teams assistant to a coordinator and eventually an offensive role, contributing to three Super Bowl victories between 2014 and 2018.

In January 2020, Judge was appointed the 21st head coach of the New York Giants. His first season showed flashes of potential; the team achieved its best divisional finish since 2016 and saw significant defensive improvements. The defense ranked 9th in scoring in 2020, a major jump from the 30th-ranked scoring defense in 2019. However, the season ended with a 6-10 record, narrowly missing the playoffs after a Washington victory over Philadelphia.

Judge's tenure in New York was marked by volatility and a highly publicized exit. Following a 29–3 loss to the Chicago Bears in January 2022, Judge delivered an intense 11-minute press conference criticizing his predecessor's culture and the Washington franchise. This outburst, combined with controversial play-calling—such as calling for consecutive quarterback sneaks in a loss to Washington—led to his firing just a week later. He finished his Giants tenure with a 10-23 record.

Following his departure from New York, Judge returned to the Patriots in 2022 as an offensive assistant and quarterbacks coach. By 2024, he moved to the collegiate level, joining Lane Kiffin's Ole Miss staff as a senior analyst, where he helped oversee one of the nation's top offenses.
