The Only Quarterback to Reach the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl, and Grey Cup
In short: Joe Kapp was a singular force in football history, defined by a relentless, physical style that prioritized team unity over individual accolades. Beyond his unique ability to lead teams to championship games across three distinct leagues, he became a symbol of defiance against the rigid constraints of professional sports contracts.
Born in 1938, Joe Kapp carved a path through football that few have ever matched. He remains the only quarterback to have started in the Super Bowl, the Rose Bowl, and the Grey Cup. His collegiate career at the University of California, Berkeley, saw him earn All-American honors in 1958 and lead the Golden Bears to a Pacific Coast Conference championship. Despite being drafted by the Washington Redskins in 1959, he found his professional footing in the Canadian Football League, where he spent six seasons with the BC Lions and secured a Grey Cup victory in 1964.
Kapp’s transition to the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings in 1967 marked the beginning of a turbulent but impactful tenure. Known for a rugged, aggressive playing style—often running directly into defenders rather than sliding—he led the Vikings to a Super Bowl IV appearance in 1969. His leadership was unconventional; he famously refused the team MVP award, insisting that every player on the roster shared equal value. His career eventually stalled due to a contract dispute with the NFL, leading to a landmark anti-trust lawsuit that challenged the league's standard player contracts.
After his playing days, Kapp transitioned into coaching and acting, appearing in films like The Longest Yard. He returned to his alma mater, Cal, as head coach from 1982 to 1986, where he oversaw the legendary five-lateral kickoff return known as The Play. Though his later years were marked by a battle with Alzheimer’s disease, his legacy as a fierce competitor and a pioneer for player rights remains firmly cemented in the history of the sport. He passed away in 2023 at the age of 85.
