How a top cornerback rose to become the league's highest-paid defensive back
In short: From a highly touted prospect in the 2021 NFL draft to a Pro Bowl star, Jaycee Horn has navigated a career defined by elite talent and significant injury setbacks. His journey from the South Carolina Gamecocks to securing a massive $100 million contract extension highlights his resilience and impact.
Jaycee Horn entered the NFL in 2021 as a premier defensive prospect. After a standout collegiate career at the University of South Carolina, where he was named freshman All-Southeastern Conference in 2018, he was selected 8th overall by the Carolina Panthers. His arrival was highly anticipated, with analysts like Mel Kiper Jr. and Pro Football Focus ranking him among the top cornerbacks in his draft class. He attended Alpharetta High School in Georgia before moving to the collegiate level. During his senior year of high school, he recorded 44 tackles and five interceptions. This performance earned him a spot in the 2018 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.
His professional tenure has been a mixture of high-level production and physical challenges. During his rookie season, Horn faced a fractured foot that limited him to just three games. He overcame such setbacks in subsequent years, including a broken wrist in late 2022 and various hamstring and hip injuries. Despite these hurdles, his performance remained elite; in 2022, he recorded 53 combined tackles and three interceptions, and in 2024, he achieved a career-high 68 combined tackles and two sacks. His 2022 season included a notable interception against Geno Smith of the Seattle Seahawks. He also recorded a season-high of six combined tackles during a victory over the Detroit Lions.
The culmination of this perseverance arrived on March 10, 2025, when the Panthers signed Horn to a massive four-year, $100 million contract extension. This deal, which includes $72 million guaranteed, established him as the highest-paid defensive back in the league. He validated the investment immediately, earning his second consecutive Pro Bowl selection after recording five interceptions and eight passes defensed in 2025. His massive extension followed a successful 2025 campaign where he started 16 games. This period of success helped solidify his status as a premier NFL defender.
