Why this baseball star always wore a helmet while playing defense
In short: John Olerud was a dominant force in Major League Baseball, winning two World Series titles and a batting title. Yet, throughout his career, he stood out for a peculiar habit: wearing a protective batting helmet even while playing first base.
The reason behind Olerud's precaution was a life-threatening medical crisis during his collegiate years. In January 1989, while running indoors on the Washington State University campus, the then-twenty-year-old collapsed. He was rushed to a hospital in Spokane after suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage, a condition involving bleeding into the spinal column. Subsequent examinations in Seattle revealed a brain aneurysm, necessitating surgery in late February.
Despite the severity of the event, which included a two-week hospitalization and a 15-pound weight loss, Olerlyud's resilience was remarkable. He returned to the baseball field by mid-April of that same year. From that point forward, he wore a batting helmet while on defense as a permanent precaution due to the aneurysm.
Olerud's career was defined by such remarkable durability and skill. Between 1989 and 2005, he played for several prestigious clubs, including the Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, and Seattle Mariners. His 1993 season with the Blue Jays remains a landmark, as he led the American League in batting average (.363), hits (200), and on-base percentage (.473).
Beyond his offensive prowess, Olerud was a defensive stalwart, earning three Gold Glove Awards. His legacy is cemented in the record books; he is one of only 26 players to hit for the cycle multiple times, and his 500 career doubles rank 44th in MLB history. The John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award commemorates his collegiate influence.
