In short: John Monie is a rare figure in rugby league history, having secured major premierships on both sides of the globe. From leading Parramatta to glory in 1986 to orchestrating a dominant era at Wigan, his career spans decades of elite competition across Australia, England, and New Zealand.

Born on 6 October 1946, Monie’s journey began as a standout standoff for Woy Woy on the Central Coast. After playing over 100 first grade games for his local club, he made a significant move to the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 1968. During that season, he etched his name into club history by becoming the first Sharks player to score four tries in a single match against Newtown.

Monie's transition from player to coach saw him rise through the ranks under the legendary Jack Gibson at Parramatta. Following Gibson's retirement in 1984, Monie took the reins and led the team to a 4–2 Grand Final victory over Canterbury in 1986. Beyond Australia, his triumphs continued in Wigan after 1989; he led the club through an era of total supremacy, securing four straight league Championship and Challenge Cup doubles.

His international influence extended to the World Club Challenge, where he led Wigan to victory against the Penrith Panthers in the 1991–92 season, though he suffered a defeat against the Brisbane Broncos in the 1992–93 season. Monie's coaching odyssey continued with the Auckland Warriors in 1995 and a return to Wigan in 1998, where he secured a Super League Grand Final victory. His diverse career also included coaching the France national team between 2005 and 2008 and assisting Wayne Bennett at the Newcastle Knights.

Even in later years, Monie remained a key figure in the sport, being hired by the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks in 2006 to review the club following a period of poor performance.
