Troy Tulowitzki: The brilliant, injury-plagued shortstop who redefined defensive excellence at the position
In short: Troy Tulowitzki was a five-time All-Star whose defensive mastery at shortstop drew comparisons to legends like Derek Jeter. Yet, his career was defined by a constant battle against physical setbacks. Despite playing over 140 games in a season only three times, he left an indelible mark on Major League Baseball.
Drafted seventh overall by the Colorado Rockies in 2005, Tulowitzki quickly established himself as a defensive force. In his 2007 rookie season, he set an MLB single-season record for fielding percentage by a rookie shortstop (.987) and turned the 13th unassisted triple play in league history. His range and instincts were so highly regarded that he earned multiple Gold Glove and Silver Slugger awards, cementing his reputation as one of the premier shortstops of his era.
However, Tulowitzki’s career was frequently interrupted by a series of significant injuries. From a torn quadriceps in 2008 to a fractured wrist in 2010 and labral repair surgery in 2014, he struggled to remain on the field. His frustration once famously led to a self-inflicted hand injury after he slammed a bat into the ground, requiring 16 stitches. These physical ailments limited his availability, as he missed at least 30 games in several different seasons throughout his 13-year career.
Following a 2015 trade to the Toronto Blue Jays, Tulowitzki helped lead the team to their first playoff berth since 1993. Despite his offensive contributions, his later years were marred by further health issues, including a season-ending ankle injury in 2017 and a missed 2018 campaign due to bone spurs. After a brief stint with the New York Yankees in 2019, he announced his retirement. He finished his career with a .290 batting average and a .985 fielding percentage, a mark that ranks him among the best defensive shortstops in history.
