From an unfortunate double own goal to European champion
In short: Most players dread a single error, but for José Fonte, one match featured two goals scored against his own net. Yet, this Portuguese defender would eventually transcend such setbacks to lift the Euro 2016 trophy and captain Lille to a historic French title.
The career of José Fonte is a study in resilience and longevity. His early years in the Portuguese leagues were marked by both promise and instability. While playing for Paços de Ferreira in 2006, he endured a nightmare performance where he scored twice in his own net during a 2–2 draw against Penafiel. This period was also defined by the financial collapse of Salgueiros, a club where he had played briefly, which led to his contract being terminated.
Fonte's trajectory shifted when he moved to England with Crystal Palace in 2007, eventually finding his most stable success at Southampton. Between 2010 and 2017, he became a cornerstone of the Saints' defense, earning Player of the Year honors in the 2010–11 season with 64% of the vote. His leadership saw him named captain in 2014, and he remained a vital figure through the club's promotions and Premier League campaigns.
The latter stages of his career saw him conquer Europe. After stints at West Ham United and in China, Fonte joined Lille in 2018. As captain, he led the squad to the 2020–21 Ligue 1 title, their first in a decade. This individual success mirrored his international achievements; though he only began playing for the Portugal senior squad at age 30, he was a key part of the squad that won Euro 2016, alongside appearances in the 2018 World Cup and the 2019 UEFA Nations League.
